In Greek mythology, Pandora is the first woman created by the gods. Zeus entrusts her with a jar containing the evils destined to spread among humanity. Driven by curiosity, Pandora lifts the lid, allowing suffering, disease, and other misfortunes to escape into the world. Only Hope remains inside.

Today, we commonly speak of “Pandora’s Box,” but this is actually the result of a translation error. In Hesiod’s Works and Days, the original Greek text uses the word πίθος (píthos), which refers to a large earthenware storage jar, not a box. The Greek word for a small box or container would be πυξίς (pyxis).

So, strictly speaking, Pandora did not open a box. She opened a large ancient clay jar — a píthos, whose contents symbolically represent the evils that would henceforth accompany humanity.
